A.B. Vincent diary, receipts, and correspondence, 1848-1868.

California gold rush miner diary (68 p. ; 33 cm,1849-1851), business receipts and correspondence (13 items, 1855-1868). Receipts include those for lumber, farm labor, a magazine subscription, and County of San Joaquin, Calif. tax payments. Correspondence (2 letters), envelope, and receipt are on letterhead stationery of The Leonard Scott Publishing Co. One letter addresses Vincent's concern for Blackwood's Magazine being "suppressed." Signed by the publisher, Leonard Scott, the letter assures Vincent that the magazine will not be suppressed because "many of its articles are very distasteful to us but we have to 'grin and bear' it." He further writes that they will refund the remaining portion of the subscription in the event the magazine is suppressed. Also includes a typescript (2 p.) from the bookseller summarizing the diary contents with excerpts.
